a 501(c)3 non-profit rescue ranch |
Joe Black is a 9-year-old Percheron gelding who came to Changing Leads in August 2011. He is a gentle giant and stands at 18.2 hands. Sadly he was about 700 pounds underweight when he arrived at our rescue. As of February 2012, Joe Black is available for adoption! He is broke to ride in a hackamore. He is ridden weekly and is working on basic cues. We are also working on maintaining forward motion. He continues to show progress with each session. We expect great things from him. We now have a good handle on what it will take to maintain Joe Black medically and nutritionally. Joe Black has missing teeth on his left side creating an uneven chewing surface. On his right side, he has shear mouth which also causes an uneven chewing surface. He will need frequent dental exams to keep his teeth in workable condition. While he can eat small amounts of hay, he cannot rely on hay and forage to maintain his weight. Joe Black will always need to have his nutritional needs met with soaked alfalfa and grain twice a day. Currently, Joe Black consumes 12-14 bags of grain and 16 bags of alfalfa a month. Joe Black's adoption fee is $1,500. |
